ABOUT US

At Family Martial Arts, We believe every child has greatness inside them, and our job is to bring that to the surface! We do that by focusing on delivering a positive teaching style you want your child around. We offer an amazing fun atmosphere to learn, get your ninja on, and develop leadership skills that inspire the greatness to emerge from within your child!

We have a secret sauce!!! Our program is designed to take things hard or challenging for your child's age group, get your child good... then raise the bar! We get them good again, and raise the bar again so that by the time your child graduates our program, they are on average ranking in the top 10% of kids their age across the country! This along with our amazing family atmosphere and caring staff is the breeding ground for developing your child's focus, confidence, and discipline!

Once you walk through the door, you will feel welcome, and accepted for where you are at and realize that we are exactly the family you want to be a part of! Students get involved and genuinely care about each other and their success. Come see for yourself! ABOUT BRIAN BAKER - OUR CHIEF INSTRUCTOR AND SELF-DEFENSE COACH!

My name is Brian Baker, I am currently a 4th Degree Black Belt.

I trained under Olympian, Master Barb Kunkel, and have found that teaching has become a passion of mine. I love working with kids! More importantly, I love inspiring students to be their best! I have had the opportunity to be surrounded by the best of the best in the Taekwondo world!

I have a unique approach to balancing discipline and confidence with a very positive style of teaching of looking for the best in the kids I teach.

On a personal note, I underwent huge back surgery several years ago.

After my surgery, the Neurosurgeon told me it is not "if" but "when" I will have my next surgery so I am not doing all the sports I once loved like mountain biking, skiing, and 4x4ing, etc.

My Taekwondo teacher assured me she knew how to work with people with injuries and said I needed to listen to my own body and make decisions best for me, but she would push me to help me reach the potential I never knew I had!

(Master Kunkel had personally blown out both knees before competing in the Olympics, so she had first-hand experience on how to take it one step at a time yet push enough to still reach my potential.)

My Doctors are extremely thrilled at what Martial Arts has done for my recovery!

I used to only be able to kick at my knee level, but after training, and gaining strength, I can now kick above my head! I feel I am in great shape and I am very grateful Taekwondo was my solution to getting my life back.

I am now the healthy husband and father I always wanted to be! When they say Taekwondo is not just a sport, it is a way of life, they mean it! You can do this at any age, even after major back surgery! I am living proof!

Continued Education is our Top Priority

Here at Family Martial Arts in Colorado Springs, we take your training seriously. Our coaches are hand-picked from our existing student base. "There is something to be said for building a coaching team comprised of our existing students," says Coach Baker. Not only do they continue to train weekly, but we put our coaches through a rigorous training process after which they have to complete annual certification exams. You are in GREAT hands here at Family Martial Arts!

My kids have been in several activities and sports, and this is one of the best. They focus on developing the child on so many levels, and most importantly they make it fun! The incentive system motivates the kids to keep trying to reach the next level while keeping it within an attainable distance. The family atmosphere is very welcoming and the owner/instructor/black belt engages the parents while giving older students a chance to lead. The kids are super excited to go every day which is all that matters in the end.

My Nephews - Andrew and Nathan attend Classes here... They enjoy every moment of it! Tough work and training...but we have seen so much growth in their confidence and communication skills. It's a full curriculum with leadership, character building, and so much more packed into each training session. Respect is on par!

My son Anthony has been attending here and he loves it. I love the individual attention and goals he has set for him by the instructor. Shelly and her husband are amazing and gear the kids in a great direction. Highly recommended by me and my family.

I couldn’t be more genuine when I say that family martial arts has been a true gem to find! Our family has felt so welcomed here since day one and our kids love coming to class every week. The passion Mr. Brian and Ms. Shelly have for their student's success is so undeniably clear. They put so much effort and heart into what they do and it shows on all these kids faces. It has been so amazing to watch the progression in both of our kid's confidence, teamwork, focus, and discipline.
We are so thankful to have found them!

I don't typically post reviews, but this place has been AMAZING! Shelly is always super nice and friendly. She greets people with such love and kindness! She even wrote a personal note and remembered a specific funny event that happened to our child and sent it to us in a Christmas Card! It was very special 😊. Brian is always super friendly and fun with the kids! They are structured and do a great job of including each child in the lessons.

MUCH more organized than other places we tried! I love how they choose a kid (a different one each time) to encourage and acknowledge their hard work or focus for that day. It encourages them to do well! I also like how he talks to the parents about different things he is teaching them and why it is important for their age group. We drive 30-45 minutes to get here (depending on traffic) because we love it so much! Keep up the great work Family Martial Arts ❤
